It was established in 1998 gathering the feelings of the Management Committee, after the festival held several ceremonies in Bu\u00f1uel\u2019s honour and following the approval of his sons Juan Luis and Rafael.<br \/>\nThe initial trophy was created by the renowned artist from Huesca Eduardo Cajal, produced in bronze and detachable. It represented the threshold of a door and, according to the author, was inspired by the feature film <i>The Exterminating Angel.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Nine years afterwards, the image of the trophy was changed, concretely in the 34<sup>th<\/sup> edition, by the artist from Zaragoza Fernando Sinaga. It was a spread out fan that, according to the author, represented at the same time \u2018seduction\u2019 and the idea of \u2018the secret and the occult\u2019.<br \/>\nIn the 42nd edition, a new trophy was requested to Huesca born artist Antonio Santos by the new direction. The new award, christened as <i>The Chorus Girl<\/i>, broke with the traditional trophy concept. The work, designed by Huesca born artist Antonio Santos, consisted of different parts that make up the figure of a chorus girl.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2020, the designer of the trophy is Isidro Ferrer, Design National Award winner, a Madrid-born artist based in Huesca.<\/p>\n<p>The trophy portraits an ant, that is what the authors says: \u201cLuis Bu\u00f1uel\u2019s entomological fondness and training is known, also his inclination to introduce several arthropods in his films\u201d. The list that feeds his particular zoo is extensive: spiders, scorpions, crabs, butterflies, bees, flies, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, cockroaches, neuropterans, beetles. This varied fauna that sprinkles his extensive filmography holds symbolic significance.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most iconic scenes that best define this Bu\u00f1uelian drive for insects might be that of the ants of his first movie <em>An Andalusian Dog<\/em>, from which the inspiration for this trophy-homage springs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Among the most outstanding personalities who have received this award, there can be found Jos\u00e9 Luis Borau (1998), Michel Piccoli (1999), Silvia Pinal (2000), Patrice Leconte (2001), Aki Kaurismaki (2002), Jerzy Kawalerowicz (2003), Jean Troell (2004), Andr\u00e9 Techin\u00e9 (2005), Pedro Armend\u00e1riz Jr. (2006), Vittorio y Paolo Taviani (2007), Bertrand Tavernier (2008), Theo Angelopoulos (2009), \u00c1ngela Molina (2010), El\u00edas Querejeta (2011), Stephen Fears (2012), Adolpho Arrietta (2013), Carlos Saura (2014), Laurent Cantet (2015), Jean Claude Carri\u00e8re (2016), Costa Gavras and Alex de la Iglesia (2017), Jos\u00e9 Sacrist\u00e1n (2018), Marisa Paredes (2019), Isabel Coixet (2020), Gonzalo Su\u00e1rez (2021) and Terry Gilliam (2022).<\/p>\n<p><!--<a href=\"https:\/\/gallant-agnesi.188-165-133-218.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/luisbunuel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1837\" src=\"https:\/\/gallant-agnesi.188-165-133-218.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/luisbunuel.jpg\" alt=\"luisbunuel\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>Se instaur\u00f3 en 1998 recogiendo el sentir del Comit\u00e9 de Direcci\u00f3n, tras los homenajes que el Festival le dedic\u00f3 en diversas ediciones y tras la aprobaci\u00f3n de sus hijos Juan Luis y Rafael.\n\nEl trofeo inicial fue una creaci\u00f3n del reconocido artista oscense Eduardo Cajal, realizado en bronce y desmontable. Representaba el dintel de una puerta y seg\u00fan el autor, se inspir\u00f3 en su largometraje El \u00c1ngel Exterminador.\n\nNueve a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s se cambi\u00f3 de imagen el trofeo, concretamente en la 34 edici\u00f3n. La actual escultura es obra del artista zaragozano Fernando Sinaga.\n\nSe trata de un abanico desplegado que est\u00e1 cargado de un amplio significado.\n\nSeg\u00fan su autor durante varias ocasiones le vino a la mente el abanico, sobre el que fue reflexionando y al final se convirti\u00f3 en su fetiche. Este objeto, destaca Sinaga, representa al mismo tiempo la \"seducci\u00f3n\" y la idea de \"lo secreto y lo oculto\". Por otra parte, al tratarse de un galard\u00f3n que se entrega y se porta en la mano, este artista quer\u00eda huir de la iconograf\u00eda seudoart\u00edstica que habitualmente tienen los premios de cine, que finalmente no son objetos art\u00edsticos\". Ten\u00eda que ser algo unido a la mano y que no pudiera ser entendido sin vincularse a ella.
