Although his body is never found, the police conclude that he must have met with an accident by the sea. He worked as a screenwriter and director of commercials, and in 1969 he made his directorial debut with one of the three episodes of <i>Los desaf\u00edos<\/i>, which won the Silver Shell at the 1969 San Sebastian Film Festival. He won the Golden Shell at the 1973 San Sebastian Film Festival for his first feature film <i>The Spirit of the Beehive<\/i>; the Golden Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival for <i>El Sur<\/i>; and later, both the Jury Prize and the International Critics Prize at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival for <i>Dream of Light<\/i>.
