First held in 1932, following an idea by then-Biennale di Venezia president Giuseppe Volpi, sculptor Antonio Maraini, and Luciano De Feo, the festival quickly gained popularity, becoming an annual event by 1935. Today, with 81 editions completed, it remains a major film event, showcasing a program of top-tier works and bringing some of the most successful contemporary directors and actors to the red carpet at the Venice Lido. It continues the tradition of combining an artistically valuable program with the signature glamour that has always defined the event.<\/p>\n<p>Officially recognized by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations), the festival\u2019s primary goal is to promote the dissemination of international cinema in all its artistic, entertainment, and industrial forms, fostering a spirit of freedom and dialogue. One of its sections is dedicated to restoring and revaluing classic films, contributing to a deeper understanding of film history.<\/p>\n<p>Its top prize is the Golden Lion, which in its most recent edition was awarded to Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s film The Room Next Door. The award has also recognized works by major contemporary filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro, Darren Aronofsky, Ang Lee, Sofia Coppola, Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n, and Chlo\u00e9 Zhao, as well as legendary figures like Luis Bu\u00f1uel, Akira Kurosawa, Luchino Visconti, Jean-Luc Godard, and Agn\u00e8s Varda.<\/p>\n<p>Another of its most prestigious awards is the Volpi Cup, given for the best acting performances. Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Escriche passed away in 2008. The Huesca Film Festival Foundation decided to celebrate this homage to honour the understanding between different cultures through cinema. This prize is awarded to organizations, institutions, personal or collective initiatives related to cinema and audio visual arts and is authored by sculptor Isidro Ferrer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">People and institutions awarded from the first edition are those as follows: La Escuela de San Antonio de los Ba\u00f1os (2009), World Cinema Fund (2010), Mar\u00eda Lourdes Cort\u00e9s (2011), Morelia International Film Festival (2012), Spanish Film Archive (2014), Cine en construcci\u00f3n (2015), Pilar Mart\u00ednez-Vasseaur (2016), Ibermedia (2017), the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences (2018), Egeda (2019), Bergman Chair (2020), CIMA, Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media (2021), Instituto Cervantes (2022) and Ventana Sur (2023).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--En recuerdo de <strong>Edgardo Cacho Pallero. Argentina (1935-1992). Productor y director de documentales. Historiador.\n\nPerteneci\u00f3 al grupo fundador del Instituto de Cinematograf\u00eda de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral (Santa Fe) en el a\u00f1o 1956, colaborando con Birri en la organizaci\u00f3n y estructuraci\u00f3n de la mencionada escuela que se convierte en la primera escuela de cine de Am\u00e9rica Latina. Fue cofundador de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisi\u00f3n de San Antonio de los Ba\u00f1os (EICTV) en 1976.\n\nMiembro Fundador por Argentina, del Comit\u00e9 de Cineastas del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano, dirigida por Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez.\n\nJefe General de Taller Experimental y Encargado del Departamento de Producci\u00f3n del Instituto de Cinematograf\u00eda de la  U.N.L. supervis\u00f3 desde 1959 hasta 1962 su producci\u00f3n de documentales. Colabor\u00f3 con Fernando Birri en algunos de sus documentales.\n\nEn diciembre de 1963 viaja a Brasil, invitado por la Cinemateca de Sao Paulo. Se integr\u00f3 en el movimiento CINEMA NOVO colaborando en varios documentales como productor ejecutivo.\n\nEn enero de 1967 es designado Delegado Coordinador del 5\u00ba Festival de Cine de Vi\u00f1a del Mar, que en este a\u00f1o se plantea como el Primer Encuentro de Cineastas Latinoamericanos. Se le nombr\u00f3 Secretario General del Centro latinoamericano del Nuevo Cine, organismo creado en ese Festival de Vi\u00f1a del mar.\n\nDurante el gobierno de Isabel Mart\u00ednez de Per\u00f3n, la Triple A, amenaza  su vida y  la de su familia. Llegada la democracia, establece contacto con P\u00e9rez Estremera. A partir de esta vinculaci\u00f3n, Cacho trabaja para conseguir co-producciones entre Espa\u00f1a y Am\u00e9rica Latina. Se establecen relaciones muy productivas entre los dos pa\u00edses. Cacho apoy\u00f3 y contribuy\u00f3 de manera activa al cine latinoamericano, viajando a festivales internacionales promovi\u00e9ndolo tanto el  corto como el largometraje.\n\nUn gran hombre y entra\u00f1able amigo del Festival desde su contacto con nosotros y se afianz\u00f3 a trav\u00e9s de su intervenci\u00f3n como Jurado Internacional en la 19\u00aa edici\u00f3n de 1991.
